How to Install IPTV on Android

Android is the easiest platform to get IPTV running on, because in most cases the player is sitting in the Play Store waiting to be installed. The same instructions cover a phone in your pocket, a tablet, a £30 TV box from an online marketplace and a Sony or Philips television running Android TV – they are all the same operating system with a different skin.

Which Android devices this covers

• Phones and tablets – anything on Android 7 or newer.
• Android TV boxes – the generic boxes sold as "4K Android TV Box", plus branded ones like the Nvidia Shield.
• Android TV / Google TV televisions – most Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense sets.
• Chromecast with Google TV – works well and has a proper remote.

Samsung and LG televisions are not Android. They run Tizen and webOS, and need the Smart TV guide instead.

Method 1 – install from Google Play

1. Open the Google Play Store.
2. Search for IPTV Smarters Pro.
3. Tap Install, then Open.

That is the whole job on a phone, tablet or Google TV device. Availability of these apps in Play changes from time to time; if the search comes back empty, use the APK method below.

Method 2 – sideload an APK

Cheap Android boxes often ship without a working Play Store, and some players are only distributed as a direct download. Installing an APK by hand is straightforward.

On a TV box or Android TV

1. Install Downloader from the Play Store, or from the box's own app store.
2. Open Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps, find Downloader and switch it on. On older boxes this is Settings → Security → Unknown sources.
3. In Downloader, type the APK address we send with your subscription and press Go.
4. Choose Install when the download finishes, then delete the APK file to save space.

On a phone or tablet

1. Open the APK link in Chrome and let it download.
2. Tap the downloaded file in the notification shade.
3. Android asks whether Chrome may install apps – allow it, then press Install.

Signing in

1. Open the player and accept the terms screen.
2. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API.
3. Enter the username, password and server URL from your WhatsApp message. The URL needs http:// at the start and the port number at the end.
4. Confirm and wait while the channel list and EPG download – one to three minutes on a first login.

If you were given a long link ending in .m3u instead, pick the playlist option and paste it there. Xtream Codes is the better choice when both are available because it carries the guide data, your favourites and your resume points for films.

IPTV Smarters or TiviMate?

Start with IPTV Smarters Pro. It costs nothing and does everything most households need. Move to TiviMate later if you find yourself living in the programme guide and want it to look and behave more like a traditional TV box.

Settings that stop stuttering

Budget Android boxes have weak processors, and the default player settings often ask too much of them. Three changes fix the majority of complaints:

1. Switch the decoder to hardware. In IPTV Smarters this is Settings → Player Selection; pick the hardware or HW option. Software decoding uses the CPU and cheap boxes cannot keep up.
2. Turn the buffer up. If your connection dips, a larger buffer rides over it. Look for buffer size or network buffer in the player settings and raise it a step.
3. Use Ethernet if there is a port. Most TV boxes have poor Wi-Fi aerials. A cable is the single biggest improvement you can make.

Common Android problems

"App not installed"

An older copy of the same app is present. Uninstall it first – Android will not overwrite an app that was signed by a different developer key.

Channels play in the app but the screen is black on the TV box

The box is set to an output resolution the TV cannot display. In the box's own display settings choose 1080p 60Hz rather than auto or 4K, and test again.

App keeps closing itself

Usually memory. Boxes with 1 GB of RAM struggle with large channel lists. Clear the app cache, remove other apps you do not use, and restart. If it continues, a box with 2 GB or more is the real answer.

Login worked on the phone but not on the box

Check for a typo – on-screen TV keyboards capitalise the first character automatically and credentials are case sensitive. Some boxes also have the wrong date and time set, which breaks the secure connection to the server; set the date correctly and try again.

Android questions

Can I cast from my phone to the TV?

You can, but it is the worst way to watch – the phone decodes the stream and re-encodes it for the Chromecast, which adds delay and drains the battery. Install the player on the TV device instead.

Does it use a lot of mobile data?

Yes. An HD stream is roughly 1.5 GB per hour and 4K considerably more. Watch on Wi-Fi unless your plan is genuinely unlimited.

Which Android box should I buy?

Look for at least 2 GB of RAM, an Ethernet port and a recent Android version. Beyond that the differences are small. The Nvidia Shield is the best performer by a distance but costs several times more than a box that will do the job.

Will it work on Android Auto or a car screen?

No, and it should not be used while driving.
