How to Install IPTV on a Smart TV

Running IPTV directly on the television is the tidiest setup there is – no extra box, no second remote, no HDMI switching. Samsung and LG both allow IPTV players in their stores, so nothing needs side-loading. The trade-off is that these apps work differently from the ones on Firestick or Android: instead of typing a username and password into the TV, you register the television's MAC address on a website and upload your playlist there.

It sounds odd the first time, but it exists for a good reason. Typing a long server address with a TV remote is miserable, so the app makers moved that job to a device with a proper keyboard.

Which method suits your TV

Samsung (Tizen) step by step

1. Press Home on the remote and open Apps.
2. Select the search icon at the top right and type IBO Player.
3. Install it and open it.
4. The first screen shows a MAC address (six pairs of characters, e.g. 1A:2B:3C:4D:5E:6F) and a device key. Write both down or photograph the screen.
5. On your phone or computer open the activation site shown on that same screen.
6. Enter the MAC address and device key, then add a playlist. Give it any name and paste the M3U URL we sent you on WhatsApp.
7. Submit, then go back to the TV, close the app fully and reopen it.

The channel list downloads on the next launch. Ask us for the M3U URL if you were only sent a username and password – we can generate the playlist link from the same account.

LG (webOS) step by step

1. Press Home and open the LG Content Store.
2. Search for IBO Player or Set IPTV and install it.
3. Launch the app and note the MAC address on screen.
4. Register that MAC address with your playlist URL on the app's website, exactly as above.
5. Restart the app on the TV.

LG televisions have two MAC addresses – one for Wi-Fi and one for the Ethernet port. Use whichever the app itself displays. If you later move the TV from Wi-Fi to a network cable, the MAC changes and you will need to re-register.

About the one-off activation fee

Smart IPTV, Set IPTV and IBO Player usually give you a trial of about a week, then ask for a small one-off payment of a few pounds to keep that MAC address active for life. That fee goes to the app developer, not to us, and it is not something we can waive or include in a subscription.

It is genuinely one payment per television, not a recurring charge. If you would rather not pay it at all, a cheap Firestick with the free IPTV Smarters Pro works out similar in cost and gives you a faster interface.

Older TVs and TVs with no store

Televisions made before roughly 2016 either have no app store or have one that no longer receives new apps. There is no way around that – the manufacturer has stopped supporting the platform.

The fix is an external device. Any of these plug into HDMI and work well:

Common Smart TV problems

App shows "No playlist found" after registering

The MAC address was mistyped, or you registered the Wi-Fi MAC while the TV is on Ethernet. Re-check the address on the TV screen character by character – 0 and O, and 8 and B, are easy to confuse.

Channels load but the programme guide is empty

Most TV players fetch the EPG separately and it can take a few hours to appear the first time. If it is still blank the next day, the playlist link may not include EPG data – message us and we will send a version that does.

The app disappeared after a software update

Samsung and LG occasionally remove side-loaded or lesser-known apps during a firmware update. Reinstall from the store; your MAC registration is unaffected, so the channels come straight back.

Picture is fine but sound cuts out on some channels

Certain channels use AC3 audio which some TV apps handle poorly. Switching to a different player app usually fixes it. This is a limitation of the app, not the stream – the same channel plays with sound on a Firestick.

Everything is slow and the remote lags

Smart TV processors are modest and a channel list of 21,000 items is a lot to scroll. Build a favourites list of the 30 or 40 channels you actually watch and use that instead; the difference is dramatic.

Do I need a separate app for movies and series?

No. IBO Player and Set IPTV both show live channels, films and series from the same playlist, arranged in separate tabs.

Can I keep my subscription if I buy a new TV?

Yes. The subscription is tied to your account, not the television. You will need to register the new TV's MAC address with the player app, and if that app charges an activation fee it applies again for the new set.

Is a wired connection worth it?

On a Smart TV, yes – more so than on a Firestick. Television Wi-Fi aerials are often placed behind a large metal panel and perform noticeably worse than a phone sitting in the same spot. If the TV has an Ethernet port and you can reach it, use it.

Will this work on a Samsung "The Frame" or an LG OLED?

Yes. Those are ordinary Tizen and webOS sets underneath and behave exactly like any other model from the same year.
