Buffering is the single most common thing customers contact us about, and in the overwhelming majority of cases it is fixable in a few minutes without changing anything about the subscription. The trick is to work through the causes in order of likelihood rather than guessing.

Before changing any settings, answer two questions. They tell you which section below to read, and they save a lot of wasted effort.

First: narrow it down

Question 1 – is it all channels, or only some?

  • All channels buffer → the problem is at your end: connection, Wi-Fi or device. Go to the network section.
  • Only certain channels buffer → the problem is with those specific streams. Go to the service section.

Question 2 – is it worse at particular times?

  • Fine in the day, bad after 7pm → congestion, either on your line or on the route. See the 8pm section.
  • Bad at all hours → something structural: Wi-Fi, device or router.
A useful test: play the same channel on a phone using mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off. If it is perfect on 4G and stutters on your home Wi-Fi, you have proved the fault is your home network – not the stream, not the device, not the subscription.

Network causes (most cases)

1. You are on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

This is the biggest single cause we see. Most routers broadcast two networks – a 2.4 GHz one that travels further but is slow and crowded, and a 5 GHz one that is much faster over shorter distances. Devices frequently choose the wrong one and stay there.

In your device's Wi-Fi settings, look for a network name ending in -5G or _5GHz and connect to it specifically. On most home setups this alone fixes the problem.

2. The device is too far from the router

Wi-Fi through two internal walls loses far more than people expect, and a Firestick tucked behind a large television has a metal panel between it and the router. Use the short HDMI extender that came in the box so the stick hangs clear of the screen – it exists for exactly this reason.

3. You are testing speed in the wrong place

A speed test on a phone standing next to the router tells you nothing about what the TV device receives. Test on the device that is buffering. On a Firestick or Android box, install a speed test app and run it there. If it reports under 15 Mbps, that is your answer.

4. No Ethernet where Ethernet is possible

If the device has a network port, use it. If it does not but sits near the router, an adapter is inexpensive. If the router is in another room, powerline adapters that send network over the mains wiring are reliable and need no drilling. A wired connection removes the largest variable in the whole chain.

5. Too many devices on the network

A household with two other people streaming, a games console updating in the background and a phone backing up photos can saturate a modest line. Pause large downloads and check whether a console is updating – they do it silently and will happily consume everything available.

6. Router needs a restart

Unglamorous but genuinely effective. Routers left running for months accumulate problems that a 30-second power cycle clears. Unplug it, wait half a minute, plug it back in.

7. DNS

Some UK internet providers use slow or over-loaded DNS servers, which shows up as channels taking a long time to start rather than stuttering mid-stream. Changing the device or router DNS to a public resolver such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 often makes channel switching noticeably snappier.

Device and player causes

8. Software decoding instead of hardware

Players can decode video on the CPU (software) or on the dedicated video chip (hardware). Software decoding brings cheap boxes to their knees. In IPTV Smarters this is Settings → Player Selection – choose the hardware or HW option and retest.

9. Buffer set too low

The buffer is a small reserve of video held ahead of what you are watching, so a brief dip in connection does not interrupt playback. Raising it adds a second or two of delay when changing channel but rides over exactly the kind of micro-drops that cause stuttering. Look for buffer size or network buffer in the player settings.

10. The app cache is full

If everything was fine for weeks and then degraded, this is likely. On a Firestick go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, select the player and choose Clear Cache. Do not choose Clear Data unless you are prepared to log in again.

11. The device is out of memory

Boxes with 1 GB of RAM struggle with very large channel lists. Remove apps you do not use, restart the device, and build a favourites list rather than scrolling 21,000 entries. If it persists, the hardware is simply undersized for the job.

12. Asking for 4K on a 1080p television

A 4K stream needs several times the bandwidth of the HD version and looks identical on a 1080p set, because the screen cannot show the extra detail. If both versions of a channel exist, watch the HD one.

When it really is the service

If one specific channel stutters while everything else is perfect, the fault is with that stream rather than your setup. That does happen – a source feed can degrade or a particular server can be under load.

Message us on WhatsApp with the exact channel name and roughly when it happened. With those two details we can check the stream and, if needed, move your line to a different server. Without them there is very little we can do, because from our side the channel may look perfectly healthy.

The 8pm problem

A very common pattern: flawless all day, unwatchable between 8pm and 10pm. That is congestion, and it has two possible sources.

  • Your local network. In the evening, every household in the street is streaming and the shared capacity in your area is under pressure. Nothing at our end changes this; a wired connection and 5 GHz Wi-Fi help you make the most of what you have.
  • Your provider throttling video. Some UK providers manage video traffic at peak times. If a VPN makes the problem disappear, that is what was happening – choose a UK VPN server so you do not add unnecessary distance.

You can tell the two apart: run a speed test at 9pm and compare it with one at 2pm. If the evening figure is dramatically lower across the board, it is capacity. If the speed test looks fine but video specifically struggles, it is traffic management.

Quick checklist

  1. Connect to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, or better, plug in Ethernet.
  2. Restart the router and the device.
  3. Speed test on the device itself – aim for 20 Mbps or more.
  4. Set the player to the hardware decoder.
  5. Raise the buffer size one step.
  6. Clear the app cache.
  7. Watch the HD version rather than 4K on a 1080p screen.
  8. Pause other downloads and check for console updates.
  9. Still only certain channels? Message us with the channel name and time.

Working through that list in order resolves the overwhelming majority of cases. If you reach the bottom and the problem is still there, contact us – at that point it is worth us looking at your line directly.
